The Story Behind the San Francisco Mint

The California Gold Rush began in 1849, and it completely swept the nation. Thousands of pioneers swarmed to the state in search of wealth and the promise of a new life in the western expansion of the US. However, the US shipped much of this gold from the West to the Philadelphia Mint for coinage. But, this proved to be a dangerous and long journey for the transporters. Therefore, Congress approved a California-based mint in 1852, two years after California achieved legal statehood.

On April 3, 1854, the San Francisco Mint opened and began accepting material from miners. In its first year, the Mint struck an astonishing $4,000,000 in gold coins. Only twenty years later, the San Francisco Mint moved to a larger location after outgrowing its first facility. Housed within a monumental building, the mint survived a massive earthquake that devastated the entire city. This mint is credited as the only financial institution that could operate immediately following the disaster. As a result, it became the treasury for disaster relief funds. It moved only once more to its final location today where it exclusively strikes clad and silver proof coin sets and Congress-authorized commemorative gold and silver coins.

San Francisco Silver Eagle Coins

Coining at the San Francisco Mint stopped for about one decade from 1955 to 1965. In September of 1965, the Coinage Act of 1965 allows what became the San Francisco Assay Office to manufacture pennies, and then proof coins in 1968. When the US overturned the outlawing private ownership of precious metal coins from the 1930s, the San Francisco Mint became the first to strike the Silver Eagle coins. On October 29, 1986, the Secretary of the Treasury James A. Baker III announced at the striking ceremony that he “didn’t need a pick and shovel to start the San Francisco Silver Rush of 1986.”

The San Francisco Silver Eagles coins were struck from 1986 until 1998. Today the West Point Mint mostly strikes all the Silver Eagles coins, excluding the Emergency Issue Philadelphia Silver Eagles. However, the US Mint honors the San Francisco Mint’s history before the new 2021 American Eagle coins. In essence, all the 2020 Silver Eagle coins are fantastic conversation pieces, high quality, IRA eligible, make perfect gifts, and more. The San Francisco Silver Eagle coins serve to bookend collections as a piece that honors one of the first mints to ever strike the Silver Eagles coins in 1986. The holidays are coming up, so gift one of these wonderful coins to any history buff, silver lover, or coin collector!

The US Mint

The US Mint’s mission is to “serve the American people by manufacturing and distributing circulating, precious metal and collectible coins and national medals, and providing security over assets entrusted to us.” Since 1792, the US Mint is among the oldest branches of the government. Today, it is the sole manufacturer of American circulating coinage and special proof, uncirculated, and commemorative coins.

On top of that, 2020 is one of the most eventful years for US Mint coins. This year, the American Eagles coins saw special pandemic-related Emergency Issue editions, the announcement of the 75th Anniversary of the End of WWII Eagles, the extremely limited burnished American Palladium Eagles, and now this nostalgic San Francisco Silver Eagle. Starting in late 2021, you can begin your collection of newly designed Gold and Silver Eagle coins
