Throughout this year, collectors across the world waited with bated breath for news on the release of the 2020 Libertad line. Finally, good news graces the bullion community. The 2020 Libertads are almost here!
Introducing the New Libertad Line
The Mexican Mint recently began releasing its Gold and Silver Libertad series for 2020. Why Were the 2020 Libertads Delayed?
This year, the Coronavirus Pandemic dealt a heavy blow to mints around the world. While many mints shut down temporarily, most of them were able to open back up and resume production within months, or even as soon as a few weeks. However, it appears the Casa de Moneda in Mexico struggled harder than most. With Mexico hit especially hard by Covid-19, the Mexican Mint contended with the loss of employees and resources it usually relied upon. The production delay likely contributed to the lower Libertad mintage numbers this year. Despite the obstacles, the Mexican Mint finally prevailed and has managed to release the 2020 Libertads before the end of this unprecedented year.
Delightful Differing Designs
The obverse of the 2020 Libertad differs depending on the size. For the fractional coins, the obverse displays a majestic image of the Mexican Coat of Arms with an eagle on top of a pear cactus holding a snake in its beak and talon. Additionally, a circular design surrounds the coat of arms. The top half is comprised of the words “Estados Unidos Mexicanos”, while an olive and oak wreath compose the bottom. For the 1 oz and larger sizes, the fractional obverse design remains in the center. However, the larger-sized Libertads also include a border of 10 previous Mexican Coats of Arms.
The reverse of all the coins features a rendering of the “El Ángel” or Angel of Independence, a monument built in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico’s War of Independence. Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, holds a laurel wreath of victory in her outstretched hand. Her other hand holds a symbol of freedom–a broken chain. The background showcases two of Mexico’s most iconic volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
The Spectacular Silver Libertad
While each BU Silver 2020 Libertad contains .999 fine silver, they arrive in multiple sizes, including the 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 1 kilo versions. The variety of options available to investors makes collecting Libertad coins extremely accessible. Furthermore, new buyers may feel more at ease with purchasing smaller coins to start their silver stacking hobby. For those looking to add value to their collection, the larger-sized Libertads provide an opportunity to increase their portfolio’s worth. In addition to their incredible size selection, Silver Libertads inspire devotion among investors due to their stunning and historical design.
