The US Mint‘s annual silver eagle series is producing a limited mintage of enhanced reverse proof silver eagles to celebrate 2019 as we close out the year. With only 30,000 produced, this special take on the silver eagle coin series is being handled by the San Francisco mint, rather than the more common West Point mint. This is apparent on the coin’s reverse, where the “S” mint mark is printed just above the bottom rim. Like standard silver eagles, this coin is struck from .999 fine silver at a weight of 1 oz, and carries a face value of $1 USD.

A reverse proof coin differs from a standard coin in that it features a mirror-like finish on the coin’s design elements, as well as a frosted finish on the coin’s background. An enhanced reverse proof coin takes this even further by adding extra frosting to certain isolated parts of the design as well. This careful selective polishing greatly enhances the coin’s visual impact, well beyond that of even a standard proof finish.

As with other 2019 silver eagle coins, the 2019 enhanced reverse proof silver eagle’s obverse takes inspiration from Adolph Weinman’s classic “Walking Liberty” design. This design first appeared in 1916 on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was printed continuously from 1916 until 1947. It features Lady Liberty as she walks towards a rising sun, stretching her right arm outwards towards its stylized rays. She is wrapped in the American flag, which drapes off her body and waves in the wind behind her. She carries olive and oak branches in her left arm, symbolizing intent for peace, yet strength to defend. Inscriptions for the year of mintage, “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “LIBERTY” surround the rim.

The coin’s reverse, meanwhile, depicts John Mercanti’s updated take on the United States national coat of arms. Here, an American bald eagle stretches its wingspan behind a shield decorated with the American flag. It holds a bundle of arrows in its left talon, while its right talon bears olive branches. It grasps a banner reading “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak, and 13 stars form a triangle over its head, representing the original 13 colonies. Inscriptions for the weight, purity, denomination, and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surround the rim.

Bullion Exchanges also carries NGC and PCGS graded versions of these coins. While the NGC graded coins opt to simply list the coin’s COA number inside the slab instead of including a COA, PCGS enhanced reverse proof silver eagles will now include the official US Mint serialized certificate of authenticity within the capsule.

With a limited mintage of 30,000, these enhanced reverse proof silver eagles won’t be available long. Buy yours when they launch on November 14th to add this shining example of American craftsmanship to your collection.
