In 2017, the South African Mint celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Gold Krugerrand coin. The Krugerrand is regarded as the first true gold coin that kicked off modern coin collecting. In addition to the standard 1 oz Krugerrand issues, smaller size coins of varying denominations were also released as well as a 2 oz version. When they were introduced in 1967, Krugerrands allowed people to invest in gold and have the ability to hold the actual asset. By 1980, during the height of gold’s popularity in the world, the Krugerrand amounted to almost 90% of the gold coins that were in circulation. Nowadays, Krugerrand gold coins tend to carry a smaller premium than most other gold coins on the market because there are far more of them. Each year their mintages tend to dwarf most other gold bullion coins.
The 2017 release also included the first-ever Silver Krugerrand. The South African Mint released one million units of the silver version along with 15,000 silver Krugerrands in a proof finish. These silver coins were an instant hit and were quickly prized by collectors and investors around the world. Almost as soon as these coins were released, they started to trade at more than twice their original value!
The South African Mint is releasing the Silver Krugerrand in 2018 also, so for all the folks that weren’t able to get the 2017 coin in the Premium Uncirculated condition, fear not. Bullion Exchanges has you covered when it comes to this second generation release! This is the first year that the Silver Krugerrand will be available as a bullion coin.
Don’t Miss the Silver Krugerrand in 2018!
The one-ounce Silver Krugerrand boasts the same design as its gold counterpart. The Krugerrand coin features Springbok on the reverse side of the coin. The springbok is the national animal of South Africa. The springbok on the coin appears in full gallop over the South African savannah. The obverse of the coin depicts a left facing profile portrait of Paul Kruger, a leader of South Africa in the late nineteenth century. The image of this leader was taken from the South African Gold Pond coins that had been minted between 1892 and 1900. The Krugerrand coin borrows its name from Paul Kruger as well as from the Rand – the currency of South Africa. Don’t miss this opportunity to be the first to own this amazing coin!
