20 Franc Gold French Rooster AU AGW .1867 (Random Year)

The French 20 Franc Rooster was produced from 1899-1914 with a total mintage of 117,448,888. The total weight of the Rooster is 0.2074 of a troy ounce and it is a 0.900 fine coin meaning it is alloyed with a small amount of copper which adds to its durability. The actual gold content of the French 20 Franc Rooster is 0.1867 troy ounce.

The obverse of the coin has a profile of Cérès, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. She is a symbol of the third French Republic and represents the copiousness of the nation and written around her are the words “République Française” or “French Republic”. The reverse pictures a Le Coq Gaulois or Gallic Rooster with the words “Liberté Egalité Fraternitén” or “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (brotherhood).” The reverse also denotes the 20 franc denomination and year of mintage.

The Gallic Rooster, one of the national symbols of the France since the Middle Ages, is an unofficial national symbol of France as a Republic. The French people also see the Rooster as a strong Christian symbol dating back to when France was known as Gaul. The Gallic Rooster played an important role during the French Revolution as an image of revolutionary vigilance, confidence, and pugnacity. In the 1830s the rooster temporarily replaced the fleur-de-lis as the official national emblem until Napoleon III reinstated the fleur-de-lis once again in the mid-1800s.

Appearing today on French stamps and as the insignia for French national sports teams, the French Rooster continues to stand as a proud emblem of the fighting spirit of liberty and independence. Although French 20 franc “Roosters” are perhaps the most common of the European gold coins, they remain relatively scarce and of historical importance. These lovely coins are an excellent choice for coin collectors and gold bullion investors alike and remain a high value for the price. Year of the coin varies based on our current inventory, and is completely random.

Like all of our other gold coins, this one is guaranteed to be 100% authentic. Item will be wrapped and packaged safe for delivery.
