History buffs will want to add this historic 1818 Netherlands 1 Ducat Gold Coin PCGS AU Detail (Struck in Russia) to their collections!

Because the Dutch gold ducats were widely-accepted currency, the Russian Royal Mint at St. Petersburg began counterfeiting the coin and did so for 133 years. All Ducats produced by the Russian Royal Mint, were all the exact weight and fineness, making them as close to being exact replicas as possible! There are certain characteristics, however, that make Russian counterfeits identifiable. It is crucial to understand that the motivation behind the counterfeit coins is that the Ducat was the most common and readily accepted coin in the world at the time. Utrecht stopped minting them from 1849 to 1872 due to all the Russian counterfeits. Finally, after persistent objections from The Netherlands, the Russians stopped minting counterfeit coins in 1868.

The obverse of the coin features an armored knight facing right, holding arrows in his left hand and a sword in his right. He is surrounded by the Latin writing “Concordia Res Parvae Crescunt,” meaning “Union makes small things grow”.

The reverse showcases an ornamented square with inscriptions within, reading: “MO. AUB. REG. BELGII AD LEGEM IMPERII”. It means, “Money of the Provinces of the United Netherlands according to the law of the empire”.
